Reaching mindfulness through Pilates – Movement equals Happiness .

‘Pilates is not just exercise it’s a lifestyle that changes the world’

Brent Anderson, founder of Polestar Pilates

There is so much written and talked about Pilates and why we should do it for all sorts of different reasons. We want to understand it as an activity that you simply attend and we often see it defined as a core based type of exercise combined with flexibility. Thankfully Pilates is so much more than that.

Having been a Pilates Teacher for over 20 years I have seen the method grow in popularity and throughly enjoyed seeing people begin and develop their own personal journey with Pilates. Pilates is not defined by any type of person who attends, we see people who have injuries, back pain, neurological issues, muscle in-balances and low muscle tone, posture issues, the list goes on and on. Many Pilates people would just like to be stronger and fitter for ‘life’. One of the key elements we know  as Pilates Professionals is that practice makes perfect and you can never be doing enough Pilates on a daily basis to improve your core and balance.

Reaching mindfulness through Pilates - Pilates can both alleviate existing physiological problems and prevent future ones by straightening the spine and improving posture.

Reaching mindfulness through Pilates

Did you know that there is so much more to Pilates than physical benefits? It can also help improve your mental health providing stress management, memory improvement, and relaxation to those who regularly practice Pilates.
Mindfulness through Breathing
One of the most important core supporters of our body is the diaphragm. During Pilates, specific focus is given to breathing well and allowing movement to follow the breath. This allows us to move with intention paying attention to posture and the movements. By focusing on breath and movement you are focusing on the present and allowing your mind a chance to rest.
If we develop the habit of mindful, deep breathing it is a technique that can easily follow you into every day life especially when times are hectic or stressful. Using this technique during moments of stress can bring a sense of calm and help you focus on the present.
Increase Brain Activity and Improves Memory
Pilates, both cardio and strength elements are proven to help brain function. They encourage the part of the brain responsible for memory, planning, and cognitive function. Exercise improves mood and sleep and reduces stress and anxiety. Problems in these areas frequently cause or contribute to cognitive impairment.
At Pilates Power we focus on a whole-body workout for both your physical well-being and your mental well-being. Focusing on controlled co-ordinated movements combined with breath are key to the Pilates Method. Contact me for more information. See directions here.
