There is so much written and talked about Pilates and why we should do it for all sorts of different reasons. We want to understand it as an activity that you simply attend and we often see it defined as a core based type of exercise combined with flexibility. Thankfully Pilates is so much more than that.
Having been a Pilates Teacher for over 16 years I have seen the method grow in popularity and throughly enjoyed seeing people begin and develop their own personal journey with Pilates. Pilates is not defined by any type of person who attends, we see people who have injuries, back pain, neurological issues, muscle in-balances and low muscle tone, posture issues, the list goes on and on. Many Pilates beginners would just like to be stronger and fitter for ‘life’. One of the areas we concentrate on as Pilates Professionals ( that you will also hear in other wellness support sectors) is Myofascial Release.
Fascia: “A sheet or band of fibrous connective tissue enveloping, separating, or binding together muscles, organs, and other soft structures of the body.” (American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, 2011).
Our Myofascial Release workshop was a great success and we incorporated parts of the workshop into all of our mat classes last week. Everybody left their sessions feeling ‘looser’, ‘lighter’ and much more ‘relaxed’.
What is Myofascial Release?
It is a type of soft tissue therapy used to release physically restricted musculoskeletal groups. Chronic tension and trauma cause the fascia, which envelop muscle, to become fixed in a particular position, known as a myofascial restriction. Manipulation of the myofascial group is believed to resolve the restriction”. In other words, myofascial release is a form of therapy used to increase extensibility of tight and restricted fascia. In our Workshop we used spikey balls, rollers and stability balls to assist with the release.
What is the direct result?
When we break up adhesions (knots) of the fascia and the muscle tissue it surrounds it is sustained pressure which helps soft-tissue adhesions dissipate and the knots are corrected from a bundled position into straighter alignment along the natural lines of the muscle fibers. Relief from this bundled position helps improve tissue extensibility, joint range of motion, and even reduces pain and soreness.
This in turn helps our body move and train more efficiently, it was also fantastic to see in our workshop how everybody also felt a much stronger connection with their breathing and core strength.
